Doorbell not working, chime buzzing, video doorbell losing power, or intercom not opening the door? The fault may be the push button, chime, transformer, low-voltage cable, smart doorbell wiring or door entry power supply.
If the doorbell buzzes, loses power, will not ring, or the intercom will not release the door, start with safe triage before opening any mains-fed transformer or shared-entry equipment.
Zapline gives homeowners instant triage during electrical and home emergencies — helping you understand what’s happening, reduce immediate risk and take the right next step.

Most homeowners start here before calling an electrician.
Step 2 — if you need an electrician after your diagnosis, call or WhatsApp Entigen directly.
Some doorbell faults are straightforward: flat batteries, a failed bell push, a dirty camera lens, or app settings that have muted notifications. Others need testing: a failed transformer, loose low-voltage wiring, water in the outside push, buzzing/humming chime units, or a video doorbell that works in the app but does not ring the internal chime.
Many doorbell circuits are low voltage, but that does not make the whole system risk-free. The transformer supply may still involve mains voltage, and some transformers are located near consumer units or inside enclosures that should not be opened live.
This guide covers an electric doorbell fault, intercom not working problem, common wired doorbell faults, failed doorbell push buttons, water ingress at external bell pushes, smart/video doorbell wiring issues, doorbell not ringing even though the app works, and doorbell camera losing power.
Entigen helps with domestic wired doorbells, smart video doorbells, intercom handsets and door entry system faults across Kettering and Northamptonshire. Where communal systems are involved, the correct permission and responsibility need to be clear before any work is carried out.
A traditional wired doorbell usually has a push button outside, low-voltage cable, a transformer and a chime. If the doorbell is not ringing, the fault could be at any point in that chain. A failed push button or water ingress at the external bell push is common, especially on exposed front doors and porches.
Buzzing or humming chime units can point to a stuck push, incorrect loading, a tired transformer, loose terminals, or a smart doorbell that is not compatible with the existing chime. Doorbell transformer failure can leave the whole system dead or cause intermittent low-voltage output.
The bell circuit may be low voltage, but the transformer feeding it may be supplied by mains electricity. Do not open mains-fed transformers, consumer unit equipment or live enclosures unless competent and safely isolated.
Video doorbells add another layer: Wi-Fi, app settings, firmware, battery condition, transformer rating, chime compatibility and camera power draw. A doorbell may show in the app but not ring the internal chime because the chime kit, transformer, wiring or app configuration is wrong.
If a doorbell camera keeps losing power, the transformer may be underrated, the cable may have high resistance, the connections may be loose, or the unit may be trying to charge a depleted battery from a weak supply. A doorbell electrician Kettering customers can use should check voltage, transformer capacity and wiring before replacing the device.
Intercom faults can involve the handset, call button, speech unit, power supply, door release, low-voltage wiring or entrance panel. A door entry release not working may be a failed release mechanism, a power supply problem, loose terminal or damaged cable between the handset and door.
Communal or shared-entry systems need extra care. In flats, apartments and managed buildings, responsibility may sit with the landlord, management company or building owner. Entigen will not alter communal systems without the right authorisation, access and scope agreed.
A failed bell push, tired chime, worn handset cord or flat battery may be simple to resolve. Wiring/testing is needed where the fault involves a transformer, hidden cable, water ingress, smart/video doorbell compatibility, buzzing chime, power supply fault or door release problem.
Replacement is often better where outdoor buttons are water-damaged, chimes are obsolete, transformer output is unsuitable, or the existing wiring is not appropriate for a modern video doorbell.
Call a qualified electrician where the fault involves a wired transformer, buzzing chime, hidden cable, mains-fed equipment, hard-wired video doorbell, intercom power supply, door release fault or water-damaged external bell push.
Attendance depends on workload, urgency, access and location. For communal systems, please confirm who is responsible for the system and whether permission/access is available before arranging work.
A video doorbell may need a different transformer, a compatible chime kit, or clean wiring before it works reliably. Replacing the device alone may not solve power loss or no-chime symptoms.
Where the system serves several flats or a communal door, we need clear authorisation before altering wiring, handsets, entrance panels or releases.
