Electric combi boilers are becoming a more common choice for homeowners who want to move away from gas heating or who need a heating solution in a property without a gas supply. The Strom electric combi boiler is a well-regarded option in this category — it provides both central heating and hot water from a single electric unit.
This installation in Wellingborough involved both electrical and plumbing work. Entigen managed both sides of the project, using a trusted plumbing subcontractor for the plumbing element. For the client, this meant one company to deal with rather than two, and no need to coordinate trades independently.
The client needed a complete electric combi boiler installation, including the supply to the unit, the boiler itself and updated heating controls. The key requirements were:
A new dedicated supply was installed from the consumer unit to the boiler location. Electric combi boilers require a correctly sized and protected supply — this is not a job where an existing circuit can simply be adapted without assessment. The supply was sized and protected appropriately for the Strom unit.
Correct isolation was installed close to the boiler — allowing the unit to be safely isolated for maintenance without needing to turn off supply at the consumer unit. This is a practical detail that matters when servicing needs to be carried out.
New smart thermostat controls were fitted and configured as part of the installation. Smart thermostats allow the client to control their heating remotely, set schedules and monitor usage — all of which makes more sense with an electric boiler where running costs are directly linked to how well the heating is managed.
The plumbing work — connecting the boiler to the existing heating and hot water system — was carried out by a trusted plumbing subcontractor working alongside Entigen on this project. Having a contractor who regularly works with the same plumber on these installations means the two sides of the work are properly coordinated rather than being done independently and then connected up at the end.
The client had one point of contact throughout. Any questions or decisions that came up during the installation were handled by Entigen rather than the client having to manage communication between separate trades.
For properties without gas, or for homeowners thinking about future-proofing their heating, electric combi boilers are worth understanding properly. They are simpler mechanically than gas boilers, have no flue requirements and can be located more flexibly. Running costs depend on electricity tariff and usage patterns, but with smart controls and time-of-use tariffs, they can be managed effectively.
The electrical supply and consumer unit capacity need to be assessed before installation — an electric boiler draws more from the electrical supply than most domestic appliances, and the supply needs to be adequate. This is something Entigen checks as part of any electric heating project.
The new boiler supply and associated circuits were tested on completion. An Electrical Installation Certificate was issued covering the new electrical work. The client was shown the boiler controls and smart thermostat setup before handover and given guidance on how to get the most from the smart controls.
